PART 3: LEXI COMES CLEAN

Chapter 15

I decided not to delay the inevitable confrontation with Lexi. I knew Lexi was still staying at Thornton Manor and I texted her before I went to bed, inviting myself to meet her the next day. Then I turned off my phone and tried to forget what I’d need to answer for in the morning. If I’d had a bottle of vodka in the house, I’d probably have succumb to temptation. Instead, I took a double-dose of sleeping pills and set an alarm.

The drug induced slumber miraculously spared me recalling my dreams, if I had any. I woke to a cocktail of relief and apprehension. Lexi had replied, saying simply, “Come and see me at 9:30 in the formal garden.”

There was very little traffic on the roads that morning, as you’d expect for a Sunday. I turned the radio to Classic FM and spent the drive trying to control my nerves. How would Lexi react? How would I keep Cassandra out of her firing line?

Did I need to tell her that I’d been responsible at all? Was it necessary to come clean and tell her that I had stolen the decryption tool? I dismissed that scenario as quickly as it surfaced. As soon as Cassandra realised the green USB stick was missing, Lexi would work it out. No, I’d just tell her the truth and if possible, strike a deal with her. Odell’s story of the lieutenant who lost her fingers flashed into my mind. I wiggled my fingers on the steering wheel. Would I still have all ten fingers when I left the manor?

As I pulled the car to a stop on the gravel in front of the manor, I reflected on the last time I was here. It was only five days ago, but it felt like an eternity. Since then, I’d yo-yo’ed between allowing the Warbreck job to continue and putting my foot down. I’d witnessed Lexi’s retribution on Cassandra, and seen the lacerations on her back. I’d been Olly’s chauffeur and lied to him by omission. I’d stolen from Cassandra and I’d foiled Lexi’s plan to earn a couple of million in ransom payments. And to add to the mix, my closest friend had collapsed on the squash court because of a dodgy heart.

I shook my head and looked wistfully at the manor’s grand entrance. If only I’d put my foot down when I walked through those doors five days ago. If only I could control Cassandra. If only I could shift the balance of power in my favour. Hell, if Cassandra had told me the truth about her debt to Lexi from the outset, then Odell and I could have come up with a plan to protect her without agreeing to Lexi’s demands.

I shuddered. Thinking about the past wasn’t going to help me now. I closed my eyes and listened to the classical music still playing on the radio.

Lexi was bound to be incensed by my actions, but how was
